While each parent has their own perception of what an ideal babysitter should or shouldn’t do, there are some things that apply to all babysitters, and if followed, would be very much appreciated by all parents. Consider them the ten commandments of babysitting, the ten things all babysitters should do to put parents at ease.

  1. Call the parent a few hours before you head over, so they don’t worry about never having spoken to you. This is especially true when you are going over to a home for the very first time. It also puts the parent at ease that you haven’t forgotten that you’re supposed to babysit.
  2. Don’t be late. Parents get anxious when the babysitter isn’t on time. To make sure things don’t get off on the wrong foot, it is advisable to arrive a few minutes early. But more importantly, do not be late.Clock with sticker Don`t be late. General concept
  3. Call if you think you might be even a few minutes late.  While parents get anxious when babysitters run late, not giving them a heads up makes things worse. So try not to be late, but if you are running behind, let them know an hour or two before hand.
  4. Get the names of the children. If it is your first time with a family, make sure you know the names and ages of children before you arrive, so you can break the ice with the children. There is nothing like “you must be Hannah!” to break the ice.Little girl introduction her new babysitter, girl timidly shake hands with mature woman
  5. Offer to remove your shoes. Some families don’t allow shoes inside the home. So when you arrive, it is polite to ask the parents if they would like you to remove your shoes. After all, it is their home you are entering. Their home, their rules. remove_shoes
  6. Smoking is a big no around children, and although you may not be a smoker, if your clothes reek of the smell of smoke, chances are you won’t make a good impression on the family. So before you head over, smell your coat. If it has the aura of the party you were at the night before, you might want to switch coats.
  7. Wash your hands. Parents of young children are rightfully paranoid about germs, so don’t make them ask you to wash your hands. You are expected to ask them which way is the washroom, immediately after you remove your shoes.Hand Washing
  8. Ask questions about the child. Remember, parents expect you as an experienced babysitter to ask them the right questions. Ask about the child’s routine, their allergies and how much TV or iPad time they are allowed, and what the parent would prefer if the routine doesn’t go to plan, such as the child doesn’t sleep.
  9. At the end of the booking, give the parents a detailed account of how it went. Parents love to know and appreciate you telling them what happened.
  10. During the babysitting, avoid checking your mobile phone constantly. This can be viewed as indifference.
